I think these are cool, I can’t decide. As in, I like the ‘look’ of them (even if they are boring hipster candid sex shots, only IMO mind) but wonder why they are bang-on straight ‘copies’ with little else going off… in that way they remind me of drawing as a teenager, having to get everything so spot on and photorealistic but neglecting to take things up a notch and introduce something fantastical, no matter how subtle and clever. Somebody tell me what I am missing…

P.S. Clearly, a lot of hard work and talent is on show and I don’t intend to belittle that…

This is NOT art ,it is like an adolesent given a digital camara , mindless, souless wandering the  a tiny void that is the  limit of his experience & imagination.

    • Indiana

This is not art? Lets walk over to the modern art museum to look at paint splattered on a canvas. We can even act talk about art history. Ill even buy you a britto print for your fridge.

This IS ART. We think in real and we dream in real. This is HIS experience for YOUR imagination.

      • Su

Just because an image is drawn or painted, it doesn’t make it art. Today’s art has transcended beyond such limited definition. Today’s art is more about thoughts, ideas, and conceptualization than one’s ability to draw or paint realistically. Those splattered paintings are considered art because they express emotions more than realistic or naturalistic drawings and paintings that preceded them and because they conceptualized ideas without being narrative, which is much harder to do.

I’m sorry but what modern artist could you possibly compare to the likes of picasso, monet, da vinci, dali etc ‘modern’ art is, in my opinion, a shadow of its former self being less about the skills of the artist and more about the meaning behind the ‘art’, which does not necessarily show any artistic skill, the meaning the artist ives his art may show a new way of thinking of or viewing the world but in most cases there work, once again in my opinion, is not art

          • Su

Please study modern art history by taking a modern art history class, reading a book on the subject, or watching a documentary about it to clarify that Picasso, Monet, and Dali ARE modern artists. Many modern artists and contemporary artists, like Pollock who paints “splattered” painting, can paint realistically, but they chose to paint abstractly to push the boundary of the meaning of art. Mind you that painting abstract is not as easy as you think when you are trying to convey very complex ideas. Realist and traditional art is a reflection of ideas just as abstract, modern, contemporary art are. For example, if you look at da Vinci’s art, a lot of it is about Christian faith, beliefs, and IDEAS. He didn’t just draw things he thought were pretty. If you actually study an abstract or non-objective art beyond its appearance you’ll learn to appreciate it and get that it is art. After all, art scholars and even realist artists agree it is art. I have been making and studying art since I was six years old, for the past 19 years, and I have a degree in it. So from extensive practice and study, I assure you art is more than just drawing or painting something realistically; when artists do just draw or paint things realistically or abstractly without solid ideas, their art looks very empty, like the drawings above. That’s why some people, like “Mike and the Truth,” feel like it’s not art.

Hi this is mike & the truth again,it seems to me that some people here & elsewhere want to extend the meaning of the word art so far that it no longer means anything at all! We all know that I could decant the contents of my toilet onto a plinth in a art gellery & call it art ! Plenty of people well versed in the philosophy of modern art would spring to my defence & even praise it.(as long as I had an idea behind it apperently.)
Art has been hyjacked by a pseudo intelligencia proclaiming they are cultured enough to understand it & anybody who doesn’t “see it” is a fool &lacking in refinement of aesthetic & learning.
HA! Shout it out loud, the emperor is wearing no clothes! By the way Su , I have been a proffesional artist for 34 years & rejected going to art school because they no longer taught art, even that long ago.

um art is creating from your mind, so what if he likes doing photography with his friends then using those shots as reference, don’t hate I would love to see you doing something like this, watch you be the type that ponders away over a mediocre blot of ink on an 11×17 canvas and calls that garbage art! shut up!

    • Mikethepenartist

Ummm…. This is most definitely art you dumbass. They’re intended to look such a way, as if they were taken during a party. Appreciate something that’s better than you are and move on instead of criticizing something you will never have the capability to do.

  • Flahoofla

By the looks of it, I guess he likes boobs. xD

Naw, but this is AMAZING! Wow!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Juan-B-Sigcha/1746624956 Juan B. Sigcha

this guy is amazing! I just don’t understand though, what’s with the crosshatching in ballpoint? no one uses just lines in one direction? that’s what i do but now i feel i’ve been doing it wrong since every other ballpoint pen artist uses crosshatching. hmmm…

  • Jimmy Bolton

I enjoy the story the art told as much as the art itself. The enjoyment and careless fun while creating them. I too use ink pen for my drawings.

  • Jimmy Bolton

There are so many with equal talents if not greater talent than this artist. That is why art critics want the far fetched ideas and unique bizzare images to go with the unusuall artist. That is the demand from artists today. You could draw stick figures and be praised the finest artist, if the idea is new and mind blowing. SAMO

I don’t think any one should put a definition on the word ‘art’, as in this day and age, the word is so broad that so much can be classed as art. I don’t think photo realists like Juan Francisco Casas should be belittled, because some people don’t think it’s art. The fact is the artist has to have so much accuracy and precision, the fact that- in Francsico Casas’ case- if a mistake is made it can’t be corrected as he has used biro. To me that’s amazing talent, and an art of it’s own. There should be no defintion of the word ‘Art’ because every piece of work is intended for different interrpretations, you can’t say someone’s interrpretation is wrong because it’s just how they think, in the same way you can’t call someones’s work ‘not art’ because it’s how they work, it’s their own style that should be appreciated.

    • Mike & the truth

HI this is mike & the trutruth again, let me put this another way- A labourer uses his hands,an artisan uses his hands & his head, an artist uses his hands, his head & his heart.
It is this last quality of heart that is so absent in this work ,at best he is an ok artisan.
On a broader point ,whilst I don’t wish to restain art to what has gone before & no new ideas are permissable,If you do not give it ANY definition then anything is art! & we end up in the dead end of todays art scene, with most people being totally alienated & bewildered by establishment art.

      • ermnothanks

But you could argue that his heart has gone into the composition of the photographs? It’s not like he has copied from someone else’s images, they are his own photographs that have been taken, developed and processed by himself. Therefore surely the fact the willingness of taking these photos is his way of putting his heart into it? I don’t know.
Don’t get me wrong I don’t intend to say yours or any other persons view of phot realism is wrong because as I said in my first post no ones opinion/interpretations are wrong. It’s interesting to find out about other’s views as I’m doing an assignment in art to do with this :)

This is art for sure! All you people saying otherwise are mixing subjectivity into the whole shabbam!

Art is subjective, but to say what is art and not just by saying you do not like it ? well excuse me … isn´t art everything that gives you a reaction ? positive or negative the same? this is new in the form that his subjects are drawn in a way that hasn´t been seen on that size medium and with that type of material ( blue ballpoint!!) i think he should get kudos for picking something that has been done so many times and yet he manages to make it original – as if you never have seen the likes of it…
